Effect of manufacturing tolerances and structural randomness on the sound transmission attenuation of channel-based sonic crystal barriers
(Wydawnictwo SIGMA-NOT, sp. z.o.o., 2026) Radosz, Jan; Centralny Instytut Ochrony Pracy - Państwowy Instytut Badawczy
The study analyzes the effect of manufacturing tolerances and structural randomness on the sound transmission loss of channel-based acoustic barriers based on sonic crystals and locally resonant sonic crystals. The analyses were carried out using three-dimensional FEM models developed in COMSOL Multiphysics for a structure of cylindrical scatterers placed inside a duct. A reference configuration without apertures and a resonant configuration with a single circular aperture of 3 mm diameter were considered, with individual geometric deviations introduced to represent realistic tolerances associated with FDM 3D printing (PLA) and conventional workshop fabrication of aluminumelements. The results indicate that structures operating in the Bragg band exhibit high resistance to small manufacturing tolerances, whereas resonant structures are significantly more sensitive.
