OPEN Repository
Welcome to OPEN - the Repository of Open Scientific Publications, run by the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling, University of Warsaw, previously operating as the CeON Repository. The Repository enables Polish researchers from all fields to openly share their articles, books, conference materials, reports, doctoral theses, and other scientific texts.
Publications in the Repository are indexed by the most important search engines and aggregators and downloaded by users worldwide. We invite you to create an account, deposit your publications, and use the resources of the Repository.

Reclamation of degraded soils: Analysis of selected parameters after organic/inorganic modifications
(Springer Nature, 0024-03-05) Szewczuk-Karpisz, Katarzyna; Tomczyk, Agnieszka; Kercheva, Milena; Paparkova, Tsvetina; Grygorczuk-Płaneta, Katarzyna; Siryk, Olena; Kukowska, Sylwia; Panek, Rafał; Institute of Agrophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences; Nikola Poushkarov Institute of Soil Science, Agrotechnology and Plant Protection; Institute of Agrophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences; Lublin University of Technology
Degraded soils are not able to fulfill functions crucial for natural ecosystems and society as a whole. This is why, it is highly important to develop efficient reclamation and remediation treatments or improve the performance of those already in use. To restore utility or natural values to degraded soils, organic and inorganic compounds are applied successfully. In this study, popular soil modifiers and their impacts on Polish (Eutric Cambisol) and Bulgarian (Epicalcic Chernozem) soils were investigated and compared.

Assessment of agricultural waste biochars for remediation of degraded water-soil environment: Dissolved organic carbon release and immobilization of impurities in one- or two-adsorbate systems
(Elsevier, 0023-01-01) Tomczyk, Agnieszka; Kubaczyński, Adam; Szewczuk-Karpisz, Katarzyna; Institute of Agrophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences
The authors indicated the method of agricultural waste (potato stems and raspberry bushes) management, referring to the assumptions of the circular economy. They described production process of two biochars (BC) and defined their potential as agents for remediation of degraded soil-water environment. The study included BC physicochemistry (porosity, surface charge, etc.), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release in H2O, NaOH, HCl, and ability to immobilize copper (Cu), tetracycline (TC) and carboxin (CB) in the one- and two-adsorbate systems. Potato-biochar (P-BC) had more developed surface and better porosity parameters than raspberry-biochar (R-BC). Specific surface area (SBET) of P-BC was 122 m2/g, whilst of R-BC 87 m2/g. For both biochars, the largest extractable DOC was noted in the NaOH solution. It was predominantly constituted of substances with large molecular weight and high aromaticity, which is highly helpful in sorption processes. The efficiency of impurities adsorption in the one-adsorbate systems was the highest for P-BC (61.75% for Cu, 73.84% for TC and 54.43% for CB). In the two-adsorbate systems, TC and CB improved adsorption of Cu. Moreover, CB and TC were adsorbed better in their mixed solution. In the examined systems, the desorption of Cu was the highest with the use HCl, whilst the desorption of TC and CB – with the use NaOH. The maximum desorption degrees were noticed in two-adsorbate system of TC+CB (even 63.6% of TC). The presented results showed that agricultural wastes can be used to generate highly effective biochars with large application potential, especially during remediation of water-soil environments.
