Rozumność praktyczna. Teoria prawa naturalnego Johna Finnisa w świetle nauki Akwinaty
(Towarzystwo Doktorantów UJ, 2011) Głowala, Justyna; Uniwersytet Wrocławski
Since the end of 20th century a wide interest in the topic of practical reason is on the increase in philosophy, especially in such issues as: specific properties of practical reason, its function and proper object, rationality of human action, natural law, common good, moral obligation, justice and human rights. Results of discussions in these fields can be applied to current ethical, political or juridical cases and questions such as nuclear deterrence and genetic experiments. The topic is popular among analytic philosophers who claim that their examinations require thorough analyses of historical – especially ancient and medieval – texts on practical reason. One of the most significant contributions to this discussion is the work of John Finnis (born 1940), which includes as its pivotal part a study and reconstruction of Aquinas’ theory of practical reasonableness. The task of my dissertation is to examine the role of Aquinas’ premises and principles in Finnis’ New Theory of Natural Law. In my paper I present: (i) main principles concerning practical reason and natural law within the classic account of practical reasonableness; (ii) the objective and the main theses of my dissertation; (iii) the method and the structure of my dissertation. Finally, I list some of the most important ethical issues I discuss in my dissertation.

Teofania stworzenia w myśli Hildegardy z Bingen
(Towarzystwo Doktorantów UJ, 2011) Otlewska, Magdalena; Uniwersytet Wrocławski
The article attempts to reconstruct the elements of theology, anthropology, and ethic in the thought of Hildegard of Bingen on the basis of Hildegard’s visionary trilogy. Hildegard of Bingen was one of the dominating characters in the spiritual and social life of the 12th century. Her visionary images and symbols cover the entire world of her times and offer unusual insights into her conception of man and the world around him. The author concentrates on the cosmological and anthropological strands of her thought, trying to find a key to her symbolism. In Hildegard’s thought the sacramental character of the universe is discovered and celebrated.

Rydwan jako metafora postaci mentalno-cielesnej człowieka
(Towarzystwo Doktorantów UJ, 2011) Budziszewska, Nina; Uniwersytet Wrocławski
A metaphor of a chariot, corresponding with both physical and mental aspects of the human being, appears in numerous philosophical works. Although there are many differences in descriptions of the functions of certain chariot parts, concerning in particular physical and mental aspects, they have one characteristic is common: the necessity of controlling the senses (represented by horses) by the mind (symbolic charioteer).

Przyczynek do Schopenhauerowskiej, biocentrycznej etyki środowiskowej
(Towarzystwo Doktorantów UJ, 2011) Schudy, Hanna; Uniwersytet Wrocławski
The article constitutes an attempt to actualize Arthur Schopenhauer’s moral philosophy. The thesis of the article is that Schopenhauer’s philosophy provides an important voice in the context of contemporary moral problems such as environmental protection and responsi-bility for future generations. Moreover, against the grain of the argument made by such philo-sophers as Ernst Tuhendhat, the article concludes that Schopenhauer’s philosophy is a cohe-rent moral philosophy which contains the explanation of both the origin of moral attitudes as well as the justification of moral rules. The second part of article shows that his moral philosophy may be seen as a contribution to environmental ethics both to the pathocentric and biocentric position. It offers basic justification to the extension of the moral community by all sentient or even all living beings. The next part concerns the question whether moral philosophy of Schopenhauer gives any answer to how to resolve the problem of a conflict of interests. A conflict is inevitable in the situation where the moral community consists not only of people but also of other beings that have their own interests too. In order to ex-plain this problem I refer to the philosophy of Hans Jonas because the main goal of his phi-losophy is, indeed, the justification of the extension of moral community. I refer also to Julian Alexandrowicz’s philosophy which insists on the importance of development of ecological consciousness and “ecological conscience”. The article alludes to the problem of universalisa-tion of moral rules that are based on the conscience, emotions, and the sense of responsibility. In reference to the philosophy of Schopenhauer as well as that of Leśniewska and Pawłowska it is accepted that the main goals and values in the ethics are approved not by reason but by the virtue of emotional affirmation. The same concerns environmental ethics. This article proves that the outline of moral community is established thanks to ecological consciousness, but most of all due to emotional attitudes towards nature.
