Modern Threats to Marriage and Family in the Theological and Moral Aspect Summary The report on modern threats to family presented here is not aimed at detailed analysis within the limits of widely understood sociology, psychology or philosophy of culture. Although all those fields may be useful in better understanding of the situation of modern marriages and families, they provide only a certain description of reality. In theological reflection, however, they can be no more than an introductory stage, necessary for a theological assessment of the situation. Another – you could say higher – perspective is needed to fully understand the situation of man as an image of God, involved in the here and now of everyday life. It is all about a theological view of the condition of modern marriage and family, more and more frequently described by the fashionable term of “marriage and family in crisis”. The purpose of the here presented reflection is not to repeat fashionable statements, but to draw conclusions from the real situation of marriage and family. Should we assume that family and marriage are really affected by crisis, we ought to ask whether that is specific of our times. Throughout all the history of mankind we could not point at any stage in the life of man that could be described as free of crises – among others those of marriage and family. So we are left with another problem that can be expressed in the question: what are the characteristics of modern crisis of marriage and family? In other words – if there is a crisis, what does it concern and what is its reason? There exist already quite a sufficient number of reports on that subject (the government ones included). The point is to form a reflection that would take all this into account, but will go the way of theological meditation on the modern phenomenon of the critical situation.
