The aim of this investigation was to assess the accessibility to sports facilities in West Pomeranian towns and villages and its impact on the inhabitants lifestyle. The research was conducted in 2011 among inhabitants of cities, towns and villages aged 16 to 31. As the results show, the accessibility of sports facilities in big urban agglomerations and its lack in smaller town and villages has a direct impact on physical activity. Consequently, there is a need for investing in development of sports facilities in smaller towns and villages. Accessibility to sports facilities in Western Pomeranian towns and villages has a considerable impact on their inhabitants’ undertaking of physical activity, whether professionally or in leasure time, at the same time influencing the extent to which they live healthily.

Accelerating regional development is one of the key factors in increasing Poland’s attractiveness on the international scene. Investing in sports facilities and creating sports centres on international level means opportunities for the region and its inhabitants. Newly opened Szczecin Floating Arena is such a sports centre, consisting of two swimm-ing pools meeting Olympic standards. The aim of this article is to present the Floating Arena sports centre, its facilities and the opportunities they give for organising sports tournaments, as well as sports and recreational offer for the local community that the centre can provide, including sports events, training and educational programmes. The main thesis is that promoting sports activities in the region provides an opportunity for regional development and increasing Poland’s attractiveness. The analysis includes presentation of benefits arising from the opening of such a centre, as well as advantages of promoting sports and recreational activities in the region. The opening of Floating Arena sports centre will definitely increase the attractiveness of the Szczecin region, which in turn will help to more fully implement the development strategy and enhance cooperation with other institutions interested in stimulating the local community.
