Książka "Narracje fantastyczne" pod wspólną redakcją Kseni Olkusz i Krzysztofa M. Maja jest piątym tomem serii „Perspektywy Ponowoczesności”, zbierającym na blisko siedmiuset stronach trzydzieści tekstów naukowych rozpatrujących szeroko pojętą fantastykę z perspektywy ponowoczesnej, transdyscyplinarnej i światocentrycznej zarazem. Tom Narracje fantastyczne to zbiór studiów poświęconych ważnym współczesnym zjawiskom obecnym w literaturze, filmie, grach komputerowych i szeroko rozumianym świecie kultury. Wśród jego wielu zalet wymienić należy na pierwszym miejscu opracowanie mocnych podstaw teore­tycznych. Autorzy podważają paradygmat tekstocentryczny i opisują zjawisko zwrotu światocen­trycznego, przekonująco je udokumentowując. Przedstawione w tomie studia pozwalają nie tylko usytuować współczesne narracje fantastyczne na tle przemian światopoglą­dowych, teorii filozofi­cznych i kulturowych, ale zarazem ukazać ich wyraźne powiązania z namy­słem nad ponowocze­snością. Książka zaleca się także – między innymi – ważnymi głosami na te­mat sporów wokół współczesnego kanonu fantastyki, rozważaniami poświęconymi figurze cybor­ga w świetle teorii posthumanistycznych czy zagadnieniu transfikcjonalności. Zgodnie z przyjętą ramą światocen­tryczną w osobnej części tomu znajdziemy studia na temat przestrzeni: głównie miasta i społe­czeństwa, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem problemu utopii, a także rozprawy, któ­rych autorzy skoncentrowali się na kwestiach temporalnych (tu m.in. historie alternatywne). Roz­ległe spektrum badanych problemów dopełnione zostało przez – poparte gruntownymi analizami – interpretacje zjawisk obecnych w wielu mediach. The Rise and Fall and Rise of The Walking Dead. Od Nocy żywych trupów do 11 września

The subject of the chapter The Rise and Fall and Rise of the Walking Dead – from “Night of the Living Dead” to September 11 is the figure of the zombie in mainstream filmography. The zombie is a kind of “uncanny body”—a figure used in the cinema, but also a phenomenon whose origins should be sought in the beliefs of the West Af-rican communities which, together with slaves, found their way to the area of today’s Haiti. The subject of this article is the figure of zombie in mainstream filmography, with the main objective to show the zombie as a metaphor (used in films from the 1930s) and the correlation of such metaphors and the cyclical emergence of zombie films. The article presents three metaphors: the zombie as a metaphor of slavery, as an external threat, and as an ideology; and four cycles of periodicity: the beginning, flour-ishing, decadence, and renaissance. The correlation between cycles is used to link zom-bie discourse with conspiracy theories and magical thinking.

Keep Calm and Kill Zombies – ewolucja żywych trupów, ich wpływ na popkulturę oraz banalizacja strachu

In the chapter Keep Calm and Kill Zombies—The Evolution of Walking Deads, Their Influence on Popular Culture and the Trivialization of Fear, Paweł Wiater analyses the phenomenon of the trivialization of fear present in today’s pop culture. The au-thor focuses on zombies and their portrayal in mass media. The Undead, the walking dead—these are only two of the terms referring to these monsters. They have Haitian roots that are related to voodoo culture. Thanks to the books of William Seabrook and the popularity of horror films in the 30s, these monsters appeared in pop culture. The premiere of Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead changed their im-age—they became bloodthirsty and any contact with them led to death. The same sit-uation occurred with series like Resident Evil, which induced horror and created in-trigue at the same time. Similar to the poster “Keep Calm and Carry On”, whose meaning has been completely changed and whose Internet memes send completely different messages than the original phrase from World War II, zombies have lost their primitive character. The amazing popularity of zombies has resulted in grotesque ele-ments that can be noticed in each further example of films or games. As a result, the undead have started jumping, using firearms, dancing, falling in love, and even having sex. The trivialization of their appearance has caused the word “zombie” or “zombie” to lose its character and become associated with an elderly or weak person instead of a bloodthirsty beast that wants to eat our brain. As a result, many journalists and politicians overuse this reference. The chapter arrives at an unsatisfying conclu-sion for fans of horror that might be interpreted to mean that the zombie has ceased to be scary and necessary.

Świat mody — świat zombie, czyli opowieść o Zombie Boyu, modelkach, modelach i nas, konsumentach

Zombies, much like vampires, are one of the most frequently used figures in popular culture at the dawn of the 21st Century. One can also observe this motif in the fashion industry, where it is based in mechanisms used to incite controversy. The starting point for the chapter The World of Fashion–The World of Zombies: A Story about Zombie Boy, Models and Us Consumers by Michał Wójciak is an analysis of selected photo shoots and fashion shows for the presence of iconographic elements from nar-rative films about the living dead. A broad array of cultural contexts is cited, including the aesthetics of imaging death in the Middle Ages as well as punk counterculture. The undead character is also treated as a metaphor for the world of fashion, where values like uniqueness and identification collide. On the other hand, the category of the epidemic allows us to look critically at the phenomenon of the spread of trends as a part of the capitalist system that is based on surplus production and unlimited con-sumption.

Archeologia zombie – najstarsze niefilmowe teksty kultury z nieumarłymi

The chapter Zombie Archaeology—The Eldest Non-Film Texts of Culture Featuring the Undead by Michał Kułakowski presents the oldest non-movie cultural texts fea-turing the mention of zombies. The author introduces the 16th-Century novel Le Zombi du Grand Perou ou la Comtesse de Cocagne. This description is followed by a few historical and anthropological scientific texts from the 18th and 19th Centuries that focus mainly on Caribbean and South American cultures. Moreover, the article provides an overview of press articles, travel books and theatrical plays from the Uni-ted States that refer to zombies in different contexts and situations. The article ends with a description of The Magic Island by William Buehler Seabrook, a book that contains the first description of a modern zombie. As all texts analysed in the article are presented with a comprehensive bibliographical, historical and cultural context, the article gives its readers a real insight into the study of the early portrayal of zombies in culture.
