Abstract
This paper focuses on the complex, oscillating ways in which post-postmodernist fiction returns to and reworks religious discourses, themes and figures. Focusing on Emma Donoghue's Haven (2022) and Michel Faber's The Book of Strange New Things (2014), the paper explores the characteristically post-postmodernist tension between attempts at tapping into the community-building, meaning-making potential of religion on the one hand, and self-reflexive recognition of the limits and problems generated by the recourse to religion on the other hand. This paper places this noticeable wave of investment in religious discourses within the broader context of the contemporary conflicted, regressive-progressive return, revival and renewal of religion.
