dc.description.abstractThe article presents a theoretical approach of asymmetry, including asymmetric conflicts in the light of psychological factors. Introduction to the text contains a brief overview of the overall meaning of asymmetry and asymmetric conflicts, taking into account the historical (changes in the balance of political forces after the Cold War) and theoretical sources. Selected theoretical issues, such as the concept of „small wars” on the one hand, and realistic conflict theory, the theory of social categorization (social identity theory) and a system of collective meanings, on the other, have provided a basis to show a significant, psychological ground of asymmetry. The main part of the text is based on the presentation of cultural (including religious) differentiating the parties of the conflict in the Balkans. It was compared here tradition of Eastern Christianity, Catholicism and Islam, as a representative for the Balkan region. Causes of conflict of national and ethnic groups living in the former Yugoslavia was also based on the idea of Huntington’s „clash of civilizations”, also taking into account the social and demographic conditions.en
