The aim of this paper is to consider views on the concept of the organic form in the philosophy of design and its application in ornamentation. The author refers to some design theorists; especially to theories of Karol Homolacs. Gottfried Semper, Owen Jones and Homolacs perceive controversy in the copying of natural forms in decora-tive art. Homolacs considers both the problems of copying natural forms in decora-tive art and in painting. Additionally, Homolacs created a theory of the organic form which is similar to the form in art. According to Homolacs all the forms – organic forms and forms in art – result in their shape from the action of two opposing forces: those which differentiate and those which crystallize. The conclusion is an attempt to an-swer the question of whether art can be inspired by natural objects and in which way this should be done. The views of Gottfried Semper, Owen Jones and Karol Homolacs are similar.en
