Abstract
After the year 1922 many newcomers from the other parts of the country started to settle down in the part of the Upper Silesia which was allocated to Poland. They were often well-educated, clerical staff for administration of the province which was being created and an engineering staff for the efficient functioning of the local industry. Also some writers and poets settled down on this rising tide, in the Province of Silesia and joined the few Silesian writers and were the beginnings of the more diverse literary circles. Among them there was Włodzimierz Żelechowski, a Cracovian, a former legionary, a son of the famous painter of the Young Poland movement, gainfully employed in the Province Governor’s Office on a daily basis. In the 1933 his volume “W cieniu brzóz i kominów” came out. After publishing three volumes already, in which the Silesian subject matter remained consequently absent, this book constituted the thematic turning point, which appeared to be confirmed by the subtitle by itself “Tematy Śląskie” (“The Silesian topics”). The volume is so valuable particularly because of the series of poems describing a mine and a steel mill. The artist displayed a great competence for the technological and production processes, which he is able to name and depict in the way appropriate for poetry. Dynamic and expressive view of the functioning of the pneumatic drill, drainage system, underground transport, mine cage, shooting work description, work on the high jud and on erecting the fire dam got out from this mine of topics. In the smelting series he described large furnaces, eternal flame, steelworks, foundry and rolling mill. Although the poetics of Żelechowski was not innovative or particularly original, by means of the volume „W cieniu brzóz i kominów” he earned his place in the write-ups of the literature of that period and a worthy place in the field of the mining culture.
