Abstract
In this article, the author analyzes the intricacies of th e prison subculture, developed in Soviet times and then refined after the collapse of the Soviet empire. The main factor contributing to its popularity is deemed to be linked to the film industry. The author also argues that the Russian state approval of criminals being conscripted into private military units (the so-called Wagner Group), participating in military operations in Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa cannot be overseen in this context either.
