Abstract
The role of water in Japanese gardens – the outline of the issue The aim of the article is to outline the issue of the presence of water in the art of Japanese gardens. It shows the role of water in the myths concerning the creation of the world and its influence on the construction of gardens. Apart from its natural role (i.e. watering the plants), water is also used to get the desired perspective of view, especially when the garden uses the shakkei concept, i.e. the borrowed natural landscape, as well as to implement the rules of feng shui. It also helps to present the themes acquired from the Chinese culture, for example, the legend of the immortals or the carp jumping over the dragon gate. Water may also be presented in a symbolic way, as stone waterfalls or even the river or sea of sand in the karesansui gardens. Water in Japanese gardens may not always be wet and not always visible, but is, nonetheless, important and plays a range of different roles.
