| dc.description.abstract | This essay offers an attempt to analyze the history of Poles deported to Siberia by Russians during tsarist and Soviet times. The starting point of the author’s reflections are selected examples of Polish belles-lettres and diaries from the 19th and 20th centuries, including both classical and lesser-known writings. Siberia was considered as a collective trauma for Poles, which influences them not only in Russia but also beyond the Russian borders. The thesis captures the issues of exile and repatriation in a panoramic manner, analyzing among over the impact of deportations on Polish national identity and the picture of Russia in Poles’ imagination; the issues of discrepancies in the perspective and perception of their meaning in Polish history; the problem of historical, cultural and geographical views of definitions of Siberia; coverage of Siberia’s space, Polish-Russian relationships and both personal and national experiences by the authors of different epochs; and the impact of Siberian trauma on the further lives of its victims. | en |
