Abstract
This work provides information on the current distributions of jewel beetles (Buprestidae) in Poland, as well as new data on the biology of some species. For example, new host plants have been discovered – Sorbus aucuparia for Dicerca alni, Viscum album for Phaenops formaneki, Fraxinus excelsior for Agrilus graminis and Salix triandra for Agrilus querini. A rare case of Chalcophora mariana larvae developing in the wood of Picea abies has been confirmed. Hitherto unknown aspects of the biology of Buprestis splendens are described. The spider Phylloneta impressa has turned out to be one of the natural enemies of Buprestis octoguttata. It has been shown that Chalcophora mariana can overwinter in Poland as an imago outside of its feeding habitat. A complete list is given of all the 94 buprestid species and subspecies found to have been recorded in Poland. Maps show the distributions of selected species, and imagines, larva and feeding habitats are illustrated photographically. Detailed information on the localities and dates of capture or observation is given for some of the rarer species. In addition, species whose records were erroneously given from Poland are highlighted and discussed, as are the historical records of species, whose contemporary presence in Poland requires confirmation. The rarest species in Poland are: Dicerca berolinensis, D. furcata, D. moesta, Lamprodila mirifica, Sphenoptera substriata, Anthaxia manca, A. semicuprea, A. senicula, Buprestis splendens, Chrysobothris chrysostigma, Eurythyrea quercus, Trachypteris picta decostigma, Agrilus antiquus croaticus, A. guerini, A. hyperici, A. kaluganus, A. mendax, A. nicolanus, A. pseudocyaneus, Aphanisticus elongatus, A. emarginatus, A. pusillus, Coraebus rubi, Cylindromorphus filum, Habroloma nanum, Trachys problematicus, T. troglodytes. In recent years a number of species have been discovered to be new to the Polish fauna – Agrilus guerini, A. hastulifer, A. kaluganus, A. nicolanus, Lamprodila festiva, L. mirifica – and Meliboeus fulgidicollis (Lucas, 1846) is another species hitherto unrecorded in Poland. Eighty-one species of jewel beetle develop in trees and shrubs, 59 of them in deciduous and 21 in coniferous ones. One species – Melanophila acuminata – is trophically associated with both conifers and, though more rarely, deciduous trees. Thirteen buprestid species develop in herbaceous plants – Sphenoptera substriata, Agrilus hyperici, Aphanisticus elongatus, A. emarginatus, A. pusillus, Coraebus elatus, Cylindromorphus filum, Habroloma nanum, Trachys fragariae, T. problematicus, T. scrobiculatus, T. troglodytes, T. troglodytiformis. Four species are legally protected in Poland: Buprestis splendens (strict), Dicerca moesta, Eurythyrea austriaca, E. quercus (partial). B. splendens is listed in Annexes II and IV of the Habitats Directive as part of the Natura 2000 network and is also on the European Red List of Saproxylic Beetles. Eight buprestids are on the list of Central European primeval forest relict species, four of which are classified as relicts sensu stricto (Buprestis splendens, Dicerca furcata, Eurythyrea austriaca, E. quercus). The Polish Red List of Threatened Animals contains 24 buprestid species, 5 of them in the category EX? – extinct or probably extinct in Poland (Acmaeodera octodecimguttata, Anthaxia cichorii, A. millefolii, Perotis lugubris, Ptosima undecimmaculata), one that is critically endangered (CR) (Buprestis splendens) and three that are endangered (EN) (Agrilus pseudocyaneus, Eurythyrea quercus, Sphenoptera substriata).
