Entuzjazm i rozczarowanie. Refleksje kulturoznawcze nad pierwszymi spotkaniami jezuitów i Japończyków w XVI w.
Abstract
Enthusiasm and disappointment. Reflections from the perspective of cultural studies on the first meetings between Jesuits and Japanese in the 16th century. The first encounters of the Jesuits with Japan have been the subject of research for a long time. Among the great and extensive works attempted are those written by G. Schurhammer and M. Cooper, both Jesuits and brilliant scholars. Every year new articles and editions of historical sources are published, but there are still some points that call for further discussion. One of them is, most definitely, the image of Japan that the Jesuits had acquired before their arrival at the islands, as well as the process of correcting that picture that became an aspect of their missionary work over subsequent decades. The aim of this article is to share some reflections on both of these points. Analysing such preconceptions about the Japanese and their religion (as manifested in St. Francis Xavier’s letters) is a task that also links up with the attempt to explain what happened at various later stages when different approaches were adopted towards dealing with them. From Francis Xavier to John Rodrigues and Louis Fróis, the various attitudes may, in this author’s opinion, be to some extent compared to the process of learning the Japanese language – difficult, and thus replete with both hopes and disappointments.
