Social Implications of Algorithmic Bias

Abstract

Algorithms are becoming very potent, powerful tools. They regulate increasing number of parts of social life, economics, politics; they penetrate deeper and deeper into social relations, and personal life of each individual. Social scientists stress the performativity of algorithms; they do not see them as just mathematical, computational procedures, but as socio-technical instruments of creating knowledge, of sensemaking and tools of making crucial social decisions. However, algorithms are prone to bias. Algorithmic bias may be defined as s systematic and repeatable error or just a deviation from some standard. In the article I present a typology of algorithmic biases and discuss their social implications, which are: discrimination and manipulation. I also consider how algorithmic bias can be limited.
