"Socjologia wobec procesu umierania"
Abstract
Death and the preceding process of dying are inseparable elements of human existence. The number of people suffering from and dying of cancer is constantly increasing. Demographic, social and cultural changes cause that the family is less and less able to take care of a sick person. This, in turn, contributes to the growing number of recipients of hospice support. The aim of this article is to show the attitude of today's social engineering to the issues of dying, death and cancer in Polish society. The reasons for which sociology should conduct research in the indicated thematic area will be discussed. In addition, it will be presented why such initiatives are taken rather rarely. Based on the observation made during ongoing own research, it will be indicated how to carry out a research project in which the cancer patient and his family participate so that it would be possible to obtain a rich research material. Among the most common reasons for the fact that sociologists do not conduct field research on dying too rarely, one should emphasize the sensitivity of research problems, too much emotional burden, as well as uncertainty of the results obtained. In order for the research project to be implemented, the researcher should observe the principles of ethics and morality, remembering all the time about the psychophysical limitations of his interlocutor. The researcher retains flexibility and empathy towards the respondent; he can adapt to the pace of his speech. The number of research projects devoted to the subject of dying and death increases to a limited extent. Expanding knowledge of the real situation of a dying person and his immediate environment could contribute to increasing the awareness of Polish society in this area and thus less traumatic experience of the border situation in which they found themselves.
