Abstract

Wystawy biblioteczne stanowią dodatkową, uzupełniającą podstawową działalność ofertę biblioteczną. W artykule zaprezentowano jedną z najcenniejszych na świecie wystaw przygoto wanych przez biblioteki – The Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library’s Treasures. Wystawa ta stanowi przykład przedsięwzięcia, które ma na celu nie tylko popularyzowanie wiedzy na temat przedstawionych eksponatów oraz kultur, z których się wywodzą, ale także promocję wizerunku biblioteki. W tekście krótko opisano genezę powstania biblioteki, która zyskała status symbolu kul turalnego miasta, zwrócono uwagę na jej strukturę i sposób funkcjonowania w kontekście zróżnico wanych potrzeb społeczności Nowego Jorku, a także krótko zaprezentowano najważniejsze eksponaty wystawy. Artykuł powstał jako jeden z efektów wizyty studyjnej autorki w New York Public Library i bazuje na zgromadzonych materiałach własnych (jak np. fotografie eksponatów), poczynionych obserwacjach, rozmowach z personelem instytucji oraz informacjach udostępnianych przez samą bibliotekę.

Library exhibitions constitute an additional offering that complements the core activities of libraries. The article presents one of the most valuable exhibitions worldwide prepared by libraries – The Polonsky Exhibition of The New York Public Library’s Treasures. This exhibition serves as an example of an initiative aimed not only at popularizing knowledge about the displayed artifacts and the cultures from which they originate, but also at promoting the library’s image. The text briefly outlines the origins of the library, which has achieved the status of a cultural symbol of the city, highlights its structure and functioning in the context of the diverse needs of New York’s community, and provides a concise overview of the most significant exhibits. The article is one of the outcomes of the author’s study visit to the New York Public Library and is based on collected original materials (such as photographs of the exhibits), observations made, conversations with the institution’s staff, and information provided by the library itself.
