Ethical Issues in CRISPR for Human Space Missions

Abstract
Human plans to explore and possibly colonize deep-space require both technical and medical preparation. Medical preparation involves, among other things, appropriate resistance and protection against hazardous factors in space. These factors include space radiation and altered gravity, which are the most challenging factors for human health. Because currently applied countermeasures to the hazardous effects of space radiation and microgravity may not be effective during long-term deep-space missions, there are good reasons to consider the idea of CRISPR for the purposes of those missions. This chapter discusses the rationale for gene editing for space, and shows that basic objections to CRISPR on Earth are not necessary applied to the case of space missions.
