A metaphor of a chariot, corresponding with both physical and mental aspects of the human being, appears in numerous philosophical works. Although there are many differences in descriptions of the functions of certain chariot parts, concerning in particular physical and mental aspects, they have one characteristic is common: the necessity of controlling the senses (represented by horses) by the mind (symbolic charioteer).
