Music as a liberal art
Abstract
This article explains the place of music among the liberal arts within the so-called quadrivium, alongside arithmetic, geometry and astronomy. In the ancient world, music was not only important in aesthetical terms, but above all mathematical and metaphysical, as well as educational. Properly practised, music as a liberal art formed the basis of classical education.
