Abstract
Polish intelligence studies (PIS) are currently in a phase of creative chaos. The number of publications and academic courses is growing, yet the research community remains fragmented, and its members do not always identify with the field’s ‘banner’. This analysis addresses one of the fundamental challenges facing Polish reflection on intelligence services: what makes claims about the world of intelligence credible and why they should be trusted. Drawing on several years of work on the expanding Polish Bibliography of Intelligence Studies and earlier attempts to map the field, I propose a preliminary typology of three epistemological and methodological profiles: the Thinker, the Tailor, and the Solder. As Weberian ideal types, they represent three stylised ways of establishing credibility. The Tailor privileges sources and reconstruction; the Thinker, interpretation and the reinterpretation of established meanings; and the Solder, experience and practical recontextualisation. These orientations may coexist within individual researchers in different configurations. Each contributes a distinct value to PIS: the Tailor provides a factual anchor, the Thinker a fresh and unconventional perspective, and the Solder practical knowledge and sensitivity to the realities of intelligence work. Yet each carries a characteristic risk when its dominant warrant displaces the other two. The Tailor may drown in facts and lose broader perspective, the Thinker in interpretations and lose contact with reality, and the Solder in anecdotes and lose critical distance. The analysis also develops several subprofiles that capture extreme or specialised variants of these orientations. The typology draws selectively on scholarship concerning ideal types, epistemic cultures, styles of reasoning, boundary-work, and thought styles, while remaining tailored to the Polish field. I do not seek to identify the best profile or advocate methodological homogenisation. On the contrary, I argue that the further development of PIS depends on conditions that allow sources, interpretation, and experience to complement, challenge, and correct one another. The result is a slightly irreverent conceptual essay intended as a tool for epistemological self-reflection and an invitation to discussion.
