Simple D-hexoses such as D-glucose, D-mannose, and D-galactose were found to form supramolecular complexes with folic acid (FA) in phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS, pH 7.4) and in the gas phase. Pterin subunit of FA was found to be essential for the molecular assembly with hexoses, whereas PABA (p-amino benzoic acid) and GLN (glutamic acid) subunits of FA have virtually no effect on assembly formation. Experimental measurements along with DFT theoretical calculations reveal that hexose-FA assemblies are stabilized by three complementary hydrogen bonds between pterin subunit of FA and 3,4,6-trihydroxyl moiety of hexose.en
