dc.description.abstractThe prison in Sieradz was established on the initiative of the world’s reformers and at its dawn it was one of the most modern plants of this type in Poland and even in Europe. From the beginning, it also belonged to the largest prison institutions of major social significance. The Prison in Sieradz is a penitentiary unit with a long and rich history. It was created in 1836 on the initiative of Count Fryderyk Skarbek, a reformer of the Polish prison system, and was based on models formed in the countries of Western Europe and the United States of America, so the prison systems combining the implementation of punishment with the chance to return to society. The most tragic cards were recorded during the Nazi occupation and the Stalinist regime, as well as the time of the board of the Russian administration fighting the Poles’ aspirations for independence. In retrospect, one fundamental phenomenon is characteristic. It is the fact that the prison in Sieradz and prisoners detained in it, shared the fate of the Polish nation which was shaped by historical circumstances. The article shows the history of the prison in the tragic period of the Nazi occupation, from the first days of September 1939 to January 1945. It presents the prison system included in the Nazi policy of extermination of the Polish nation.en
