Abstract
Culture wars in our times follow the German Kulturkampf against Poland and the anti-Christian campaigns in Europe and elsewhere – pitting virtualities against realities. Germans persuaded the French not to die for Gdańsk. Russians persuade the NATO nations not to die for Kiev. The most fundamental war is fought about values: do they merit defense? For instance, should commercial sale of bodily organs be allowed or forbidden as a moral scandal? If we allow it, citizens of more affluent countries will harvest the organs of citizens from the poor ones. If we forbid it, we shall force our choice of future social developments. Yet, we would like both equality and liberty. We hate bureaucratic taming of sponta neous creativity. Should we decide in a referendum?
