Abstract
School magazines are particularly interesting element of the local communication. This media phenomenon is worth inspecting for several reasons. The number of school magazines increases, their quality improves and even more of them are available in electronic form. These letters have many social functions, and the topics dealt go beyond the school walls, becoming a testimony of the creative and critical thinking of the younger generation. Thus, for example, in France, in Germany and in the United States, issuing school journal is included in the processes of education and learning, and school functioning of the media has significant support from the institutions, which advocate the stimulation of civic initiatives. This work consists of six chapters. The first is devoted to the Polish tradition of school writings that have been operating under the various historical and political influences, and were determined mostly by educational ideals and ideology of the interwar period. The second chapter is devoted to theoretical considerations on the school press, which – due to its formal and legal differences from the mainstream media – has complex and perplexing character. The next four chapters discuss the results of my own research. The third chapter presents the results of quantitative research. 360 forms of publishing activities of different kinds of schools in West Pomerania were isolated. I analyzed more than 1,341 issues of the 266 school magazines obtained from 237 public educational institutions in region. The aim of this section of the study was to determine the number of issued school periodicals, their profiles and thematic characteristics of editorial teams. The segment of analyzed journals was described in accordance to their media study parameters, therefore the following were determined: periodicity, circulation, format, volume, distribution format, features graphic design and printing technique. The fourth chapter is devoted to the typology of functions of the school press, which – in addition to the tasks of teaching and educating – allows to carry out information and documentation pursuits, individualizing and socializing, as well as inspiring-activation, cultural and entertaining, integrating and promoting. The fifth chapter describes the test subject of the press in accordance with the classification adopted by major thematic circles. These include the texts associated with the school and teachers, revolving around the subject matter of the student, as well as those that are part of the regional and cross-cultural education. The final, sixth chapter describes school competitions targeted to the editor implemented in Western Pomerania. At the end of this work, there is attached an extensive annex, which main component is the alphabetical list of 342 school press titles, showing up in West Pomerania province in the years 2010-2014. The research conducted leads to conclusion that the school newspapers play an important role in media education, the aim of which is to acquire the competencies needed to function in a society dominated by the media.
