Abstract
Acts of terrorism have extremely serious negative consequences for many aspects of social or economic life, including the tourism sector. It is therefore not surprising that the impact of terrorist attacks on tourism has been a frequently addressed topic in research, especially over the past few years. Previous research has represented a diverse view of the issue, both in terms of the context of the problem addressed and in the research methods and tools used. This article is an overview and pursues two objectives: 1) to identify the issues that have been addressed so far in studies into the impact of terrorism on tourism, and 2) to present the methods and research tools in previous studies into the impact of terrorism on tourism. The literature review was conducted between September 2018 and June 2025 and covers the articles from 1984 to 2025. The analysis was based on keywords such as ‘tourism demand’, ‘terrorism’, ‘terrorist attacks’ and ‘impact’ that were included in the Scopus and Web of Science database, as well as in the Google Scholar search engine. The article addresses primarily macroeconomic issues related to demand in tourism. The literature analysis has revealed several interesting directions for future research. These include paying attention to differences in resilience to terrorist crises between visitors and tourists; differences in the type of terrorism, e.g. left-wing, right-wing, separatist, religious; or domestic/international terrorism.Akty terroryzmu mają niezwykle poważne negatywne konsekwencje dla wielu aspektów życia społecznego i gospodarczego, w tym dla sektora turystycznego. Nie jest zatem zaskakujące, że wpływ ataków terrorystycznych na turystykę jest częstym tematem badań, zwłaszcza w ostatnich latach. Wcześniejsze badania przedstawiały zróżnicowane spojrzenie na tę kwestię, zarówno pod względem kontekstu poruszanego problemu, jak i zastosowanych metod i narzędzi badawczych. Niniejszy artykuł ma charakter przeglądowy i przyświecają mu dwa cele: 1) zidentyfikowanie kwestii poruszanych dotychczas w badaniach nad wpływem terroryzmu na turystykę oraz 2) przedstawienie metod i narzędzi badawczych stosowanych w dotychczasowych badaniach nad wpływem terroryzmu na turystykę. Przegląd literatury przeprowadzono w okresie od września 2018 r. do czerwca 2025 r. Obejmował artykuły z lat 1984–2025. Analiza opierała się na słowach kluczowych, takich jak „popyt turystyczny”, „terroryzm”, „ataki terrorystyczne” i „wpływ”, które zostały uwzględnione w bazach danych Scopus i Web of Science, a także w wyszukiwarce Google Scholar. Artykuł dotyczy przede wszystkim kwestii makroekonomicznych związanych z popytem w turystyce. Analiza literatury ujawniła kilka interesujących kierunków przyszłych badań: m.in. zwrócenie uwagi na różnice w odporności na kryzysy terrorystyczne między odwiedzającymi a turystami; różnice w rodzajach terroryzmu – np. lewicowy, prawicowy, separatystyczny, religijny czy też terroryzm krajowy/międzynarodowy.
